Tom Petty: 'The Rolling Stones were so worried they'd ripped me off Mick Jagger wrote me a note' - Q312 preview

Comments

Mick Jagger was so worried the The Rolling Stones had ripped him Tom Petty, he wrote the singer-songwriter a note asking if it was ok for them to carry on with their song.

Speaking in our brand new issue, Q312 out now, Petty said not only was the singer wrong, he's not too bothered about being copied as long as people own up.

"I got sent a note from Mick Jagger," he says in our new issue. "Mick said, I think we've accidentally taken something from one of your songs.

"I played the tape and I don't what he was thinking because it didn't sound like one of mine. But, hey, everybody borrows something from someone."

He adds he didn't even mind The Strokes adapting his American Girl into their song Last Nite, explaining "They admit it and good luck to 'em!"
