With London currently enjoying the spotlight thanks to a certain spots day going on in Stratford, it seems a good time to celebrate the capital. In fact some of its residents are doing just that, with Man Like Me releasing the Mike Skinner mixed London Town VIP on 20 August, plus they've also got a London show at the Electric Ballroom on 3 October that they've managed to convince The Streets man to support them at. To mark this hometown pride, the duo's Johnny Langer has picked out his favourite places in the city. "London is all I know. I've never lived anywhere else and even though I plan to get the hell out of here one day I'm attached to the place like we are all attached to our phones," he explains. "I'm no connoisseur and don't claim to be London. I'm not that in with many people or establishments and only know a limited amount which is north, east and central. I have no clue about south..."
The Crown And Goose, Camden
This pub is a Camden stalwart. I remember this is where my parents and their mates used to hang out in the 90s and now it's the same with our generation. In our early years we were always in the Pineapple in Kentish Town but that all came to a head and now we have moved down the road to Delancey Street. The pub is run by an absolute legend called Ben who is one of the most fantastic blokes I have met and is frequented by Caan and loads of other Camden faces who we have grown up with over the years. This all comes together to create a wonderful atmosphere that you should savour as these times don't last forever in these establishments we call pubs.
As a big gooner I couldn't not give Highbury a mention. I still have vivid memories of being a kid on my dads shoulders led through the backstreets of Islington and finding that stadium neatly tucked away amongst the houses. Walking up those stairs to pitch side and being able to see your hero Ian Wright strut his swagger in the flesh! It still doesn't get better! It's a shame it has gone as I'm not a massive fan of The Emirates. Football and London has never been the same since that magnificent stadium into flats.
The heath is the best park in London, fact! What else can you say. It's got the ponds for a swim on a hot summers day - well, that is when we get one. It's the best for getting out your bikes as a kid and going exploring or experimenting with drugs. It's great for spicing up your love life with a dramatic outdoor shag or playing boules with the old people down on the green.
Although I feel a little young for Soho I still feel massive excitement when I'm in or around it. It definitely feels like the most vibrant area of London seeped in the most lavish debauched history. Speak to anyone over 50 and they can tell all sorts of tales from many of its old clubs, bars and pubs many of which are still there tucked closely together in tight seedy alleys.
9 Lyme Terrace
Nothing means more to me than the house I grew up in! That place defined my life and I know no other building will mean as much to me. It was on the canal slap bang in the middle of Camden town so everybody would drop in. This was mainly before mobile phones so whenever that door knocker went you never quite knew who to expect. Unfortunately it was sold when I was 23. The emotions and pain I feel as I walk past and peer in through my window and see some random in my room kills me every time. If I ever make any cash I'm buying it back!
