John Lydon: "Pussy Riot are very, very brave to take a stance in Russia" (Q315 preview)

Comments

John Lydon has praised Russian punk band Pussy Riot, telling Q they are "very, very brave to take a stance" against the country's government.

Three singers from the band, Nadezhda Tolokonnikova, Maria Alyokhina and Yekaterina Samutsevich, were sentenced to two years in prison for "hooliganism" earlier this month, after staging a punk protest in Moscow's main cathedral in March. They were objecting to the way the Russian Orthodox Church had endorsed Vladimir Putin's presidential campaign.

Answering readers' questions in our new issue, Q315 which is out today, the former Sex Pistol expresses his support for the band.

"They're incredibly staunch and brave," he declares. "I know how scary that country is. I do not masturbate in Russian hotel rooms because you know there is a camera on the ceiling and it's going to end up on your file.

"I love them girlies. They are my kind of peeps. I even love their pussy farts. Punk loosened things up in the UK but some countries lag far, far behind. I hope they succeed before Sting and Geldof and Phil Collins do a benefit concert. Pussy Riot will still be in jail because those cunts don't get you out of jail. People like me get you out of jail.

"Russia is a place where you have to be very, very brave to take a stance. My heart goes out to them."

Get Q315 now either in print of via our new iPad edition for the full interview with Lydon, including his why there won't be a new Sex Pistols album, his appearance on Question Time, his views on the monarchy, the Olympics and much more.

  • Does anyone really care what the face of country life butter has to say about modern punk defiance, i suggest people listen to Jeffrey Lewis "punk is dead" Pretty much explains why is view is redundant.

  • No music created since has made him irrelevant, and Pussy Riot would not have existed without him.

  • @sam....That Jeffery Lewis song you refer to is none other than a rendition of an old Crass tune....written in 1980!!!....

  • I cannot sit idly by when people with no talent knock this wonderful artist. PIL are probably the best band ever and John is a true original and a gentlman. May the road rise with you bro.

  • True original.
Sam - doing that commercial was the "punkest" thing he could've done. You fail to see that in your uneducated, limited view.

  • Thank you Johnny Forgotten. What we really need is a desperate, fat-arsed 60 year old “dangerous” nostalgia act from north London, who still thinks it is of interest to someone, that he regards even his own farts as somehow “ironic”, to set the Finns straight. Thank you, Johnny. Now, off you go, back to your PiLgrimage to the pier theatre circuit to flog your stable of dead horses.
