The nominees for the 2012 Barclaycard Mercury Prize were announced last night in London. The 12 albums in contention are:

The winner will be announced at ceremony at the London Roundhouse on 1 November.

Russian Prime Minister Dmitry Medvedev has suggested that the three singers from Pussy Riot who were gaoled for hooliganism should be released. Though criticising their protest in a Moscow cathedral in March he said their two year sentences were "counter productive in this case".
