Jamie Skey @jamie_skey rounds-up all this week's most significant singles, plus the new songs that have surfaced online in the last seven days that you shouldn't miss...
Singles out today, 8 October 2012
Back in July, Swedish House Mafia called time on their career as live performers... but not quite. With extra global dates now announced, the stadium ravers have a few songs on the way, with farewell album Until Now out later this month (22 October), first single Don't You Worry Child is no tear-stained farewell but business as usual thanks to its screaming, elephantine synths and bubblegum euphoria.
Nas is releasing his 2008-recorded, collaboration with the late Amy Winehouse, the smooth, lustful, jazz-inflected Cherry Wine, which, typically for Nas, is coolly
confident and delivered with unshowy intellect.
Of late, the visually arresting Nicki Minaj has taken a detour from her free flowing, feisty rap styling's to, somewhat disappointingly, knock out generic euro-house floor fillers like Va Va Voom. Fuelled with typically racy lyrics, the track is lightweight as candyfloss and glossed over with dubby squelches and synths as plastic as her nails.
Online now
Confrontational, relentlessly noisy hip hop collective Death Grips have tried to leak their second album, No Love - Deep Web, via YouTube. Come Up And Get Me, second track on the album, brings on the bad vibes in a disorientating drone of brutal spitting and dark, pummeling electro.
Beck has posted online a sprawling, epic 20 minute reworking of piano minimalist Phillip Glass' NYC 73-78, ahead of an album that will see more of the composer's compositions reworked by contemporary artists. An arresting sound collage of over twenty minutes, it's at once serene, trippy and mesmeric.
The Walkmen are releasing a limited seven-inch single, Dance With Your Partner/ Vermeer, which boasts tender, almost Fleet Foxes-like harmonies and arresting melodies.
