Playlist - "Independence & Individuals" by Little Nikki featuring Drake, Michael Jackson, Eminem & more
New UK grime-meets- funk singer Little Nikki releases her first track Intro Intro this week (5 November) as a download and she's determined to stand out.
"I think being individual is a vital part to being an artist. It gives you so much more leeway with what you can and can't do," she declares, explaining why she's made us this Playlist featuring "Independence and Individuals". "People want to see the real you, and what better way to show them who you are than standing up like, hey I'm over here. There's no need to give someone two of one thing when you can express yourself as an individual." Here are her selections...
Michael Jackson - Bad
"This song is a perfect example at how MJ is one of a kind. His voice and his style are shown off to the max in Bad - its complex and layered but its brilliance is in its simplicity."
Labrinth - Let The Sun Shine
"Labrinth's voice is very distinct, and when you mix that with his incredible and intelligent style of writing you instantly know it's him. He writes and performs his own songs, and that's very inspirational too."
Maroon 5 - Payphone
"Maroon 5 have always had their own sound. In this instance, their sound has developed slightly but Payphone is the perfect mix of pop and individuality. It's an epic song and there's nothing like it - in terms of sound, structure and feel."
Bruno Mars - Liquor Store Blues
Bruno Mars' vocal perfection always sounds effortless and unplanned. It sounds as if no one else has told him how to sing his own songs and that lets this song and his sound be very individual and uncompromising.
Drake - Find Your Love
"Drake has created a style of his own through the way he writes. His vocal individuality and distinct sounds sets him apart from most current artists and his mad level of introspection and self-awareness in his lyrics are also a breath of fresh air and really pull the listener in close."
NB Pretty Boy Swag currently unavialable
Eminem - Love The Way You Lie ft Rihanna
"Eminem and Rihanna are amazing both on their own and together. Love The Way You Lie is a perfect balance between Eminem's lyrics and Rihanna's distinct voice. its an incredible song - both artists' energies collide and it really works."
Ed Sheeran - Gold Rush
"Out of all of Ed Sheeran's songs I feel Gold Rush captures his uniqueness most perfectly; quirky lyrics and remarkable vocals all written and done by him."
Nicki Minaj - Your Love
"Her style, sound and just her original vocal make Nicki Minaj the huge star that she is. Your Love shows off her vocals and her individuality to a tee - in a way that mirrors that of the artist who is sampled on the song - Annie Lennox with No More I Love Yous. It's a great sample and a great song."
Soulja Boy - Pretty Boy Swag
"Soulja Boy has his own lane: Effortless swag and a sound of his own. Pretty Boy Swag just shows the world how cool he really is in his own special way."
Alicia Keys - If I Ain't Got You
"Even though she's singing about needing and wanting somebody, Alicia Keys still comes across as a strong woman who could accomplish anything if she put her mind to it. She's inspirational and independent.
