Hurricane Sandy benefit gig 12-12-12, which we streamed right here, took place last night in New York's Madison Square Garden. Bruce Springsteen opened the show with a short set that began with Land Of Hope And Dreams, while the likes of The Rolling Stones, The Who and Alicia Keys also played. Eddie Vedder joined Roger Waters for Comfortably numb, while Springsteen reappeared to play Who Says You Can't Go Home with Bon Jovi. Coldplay's Chris Martin was joined by Michael Stipe during his three-song set for a version of Losing My Religion, though the collaboration of the evening had to be for Paul McCartney who recruited Nirvana pair Dave Grohl and Krist Novoselic to play heavy-sounding new song Cut Me Some Slack. The night was rounded off by Keys, who returned to the stage to perform Empire State Of Mind.

However one person who was less than thrilled about Macca playing with Nirvana's rhythm section was Courtney Love. The singer was reportedly "not amused" by the collaboration adding a dig: "Look, if John [Lennon] were alive it would be cool."

Norah Jones has paid tribute to her father, Ravi Shankar who died yesterday. Despite not being brought up by the sitar player, and previously not wishing to discuss him in detail, the singer released a statement declaring: "My dad's music touched millions of people. He will be greatly missed by me and music lovers everywhere."

Lady Gaga discussed collaborating with The Rolling Stones while in the bath. The singer was so keen to take Mick Jagger's call she took it while having a wash rather than asking him to call back/

Shame Mick didn't put it in writing though, some of the Rolling Stone's old love letters have sold for £187,250 at auction. The "poetic and self-aware" notes from the 25 year-old Jagger to Marsha Hunt sold for double their estimate.

  • All the Macca haters, including some who write for this magazine and were trashing McCartney on Twitter, are, I hope eating their words. Paul was awesome last night. I can't think of any other legend who has to put up with as much crap as Macca does, and yet he keeps keeping on, challenging rock's conventions and doing whatever the hell he wants. ONE. OF. A. KIND.

  • @M Rosin
You're right, Paul was brilliant. The haters should just shut up (including Courtney Love, she's a b*tch).
