Playlist - City Reign's "Songs recorded in strange places" feat Johnny Cash, U2, Interpol, Foos & more

Comments

Manchester four-piece City Reign release their new album, Another Step on Monday (25 February). Shunning the comforts of a recording studio, the record was made in Salford's Sacred Trinity Church. To celebrate this outbreak of field recording, the band have put together a Playlist of tracks also recorded in out of the ordinary places. "It was our producer Sam Jones who suggested we record in the church," explains the band's Michael Grice. "He sounded so passionate and excited by the idea of using the natural reverb of the hall, that we thought we'd be mad not to jump at the chance to do something a bit different. We believe the album was strong enough to stand up without too much computer wizardry, so we felt using the natural acoustics of the big hall, with the wooden panels and pews helping create that lovely resonance would bring out the best from the songs.
"Due to the restrictions of the budget, it had to be a well organised - apart from a near disastrous double booking when a funeral nearly cost us our valuable strings session! Thankfully it got sorted and it turned out as well as we could have hoped. It's great to have the sounds of the big classic valve amps reverberating around this big church hall, but it's no easy feat to harness that sound onto a recording and Sam's done a brilliant job."

Jonny Cash - Folsom Prison Blues
"Most live albums are recorded in stadiums, not this one recorded in the heart of the Californian prison. The man in black was not to be messed with."

Doves - M62 Song
"This is from The Last Broadcast is my favourite album of all time. M62 song was recorded under the same flyover I used to go under this everyday on my way to work and would always sing this to myself."

Deep Purple - Smoke On The Water
"This is a classic tale of hitting the jackpot. Originally set to record in a Montrerux Casino, it fortunately burnt down the night before during a Frank Zappa concert. Writing the song about the previous nights events, Deep Purple eventually recorded it in a local theatre and a hotel corridor."

Jeff Lyne - Mercy, Mercy
"With patch bays in every room the ELO and Travelling Wilburys' man recorded this standout track from his 2012 album from the comfort of his LA home. Using the natural sound of eachroom to achieve his vision, I can't say I'm not jealous."

My Morning Jacket - At Dawn
"Taken from the album of the same name. Jim James recorded his vocals in a grain silo creating the distinctive reverb sound that was to become their signature."

U2 - Pride (In The Name Of Love)
"Brian Eno selected Slane Castle for the band to record The Unforgettable Fire. Bono ordered the crew to call him King Bono during the recording."

Killing Joke - Exorcism
"I think we'd be a little too frightened to record here, but Killing Joke recorded in the King's Chamber of Cairo's Great Pyramid."

Interpol - Safe Without
"The drums for this song were recorded in the Electric Lady Studio's elevator shaft. The drum booth must have been double booked..."

Metallica - St Anger
"Apparently the band wanted to get back the feeling of playing in a garage, so they rented an old army barracks. Not sure how that's the same thing myself but each to their own."

Foo Fighters - Rope
"Dave Grohl and the gang went one better than Metallica and recorded Wasting Light in his garage. Dave wanted to record to tape rather than Pro-Tools and even went to the effort of cutting it up and putting it inside the CDs."

Bon Iver - Skinny Love
"Following a break up from his girlfriend. Justin Vernon retreated to his Dad's hunting cabin for a break from the world. With just a mic, guitar and brothers second hand drums the heartache and exclusion soon turned to having Kanye West' number on speed dial."
