"Quiffs were big back in the day," observes singer Moya - real name Emily Andrews - and she means not just in size but in influence. "The quiff for me represents not just a look though, but brilliant musicians who have definitely moulded the music world we know and love today as easily as they've moulded their hair." With her debut album Lost & Found out now, a new single A Little More Love out this week (15 April) and dates supporting Rod Stewart in June, Andrews is hoping the quiff's magic wax is about to rub off on her too. "I love my quiff, it makes me feel powerful, it makes me want to stand out and funnily enough, sometimes makes me more creative," she declares. "The quiff must have special powers because look at what music it helped create. So give it a go, stick on this playlist and get quiffed up - the higher the better!"
La Roux - In For The Kill
"I have fond memories of this song because it came out around the same time as my first trip to Ibiza. That holiday was total madness. Not only does La Roux have the most horizontal quiff I have ever seen but she also kills it vocally in this song."
Elvis Presley - Jailhouse Rock
"Back in college I danced to this song and couldn't help but think how much I wanted to be around in his era. Some might associate this song with some terrible man and his rendition at a karaoke night but I love it for instrumentation and dam right coolness."
Annie Lennox - Walking On Broken Glass
"I know you'll all screaming that she doesn't have a quiff but in 1984 she definitely had this cropped sides/slicked back look and anyway I love her so she must be involved. The opening piano line in this song actually makes my heart skip a little bit when it comes on. It's simple but ever so powerful."
Maroon 5 - She Will Be Loved
"When i was going through my teenage angst days I used to put this song on all the time. It was an awkward stage of my life. I really miss the old Maroon 5 music though, their Songs About Jane album is still up there for me and their song Sunday Morning is still a regular on any of my playlists for its calming effects. As for Levine's quiff though, it's pretty low, I'd like to see some more height."
No Doubt - Don't Speak
"The beautiful blonde bombshell that is Gwen Stefani rocked some very interesting hair styles through the 90s but her 1940s style quiff she fashioned in the mid 90s is the ultimate winner. I love how this song progresses, the fact that it dips in and out of this two-note guitar line then smashes into the chorus is really quite tasty."
The Smiths - How Soon Is Now
"Morrissey puts it perfectly with the line I am human and I need to be loved/ just like everybody else does, and what a wonderful man he is for it. It's a line the whole world can relate too. Both Marr and Morrissey sported some very fetching quiffs back in the day."
Janelle Monae - Tightrope
"Janelle pulls off the classic Teddy Boy look effortlessly and for me would win first place for best quiff. She's really cool. If you need some get up and go in your life then stick this on, it will have you finger snapping around the kitchen."
The Clash - Train In Vain
"I have only two things to say about this song. 1) The harmonica line is epic and my god do I wish I knew how to play it! 2) I need to give Shirley Manson a shout out because the drum beat was also sampled by Garbage in their song Stupid Girl and she displayed a decent quiff at times too. Mick Jones and Joe Strummer's hair weren't bad either..."
Emile Sande - Heaven
"The modern day quiff fashionista and she does it rather well I must say. Heaven, for me, is one of Sande's stand out tracks because of its gospel sound. Every time I hear this song, I want to throw my hands in the air and run around a bit."
Bruno Mars - Liquor Store Blues
"I chose this more obscure Bruno Mars track due to the fact that I don't think it gets enough credit. I'm a huge fan of reggae/blues and have worked with some Caribbean artists so I feel like this song pushes a lot of buttons for me. As for Bruno Mars' quiff, it really is magnificent. I'd like to meet his hair stylist."
