Reverend & the Makers treated the audience to two sets - one in the street!

Gig Review

Reverend & The Makers road tested new tracks from their second album before an impromptu outside set at Sony Ericsson Presents Q The Music Club Live at the Hard Rock Cafe on Monday October 12...

Sheffield's baggy-rockers visit London for a special gig. Celebrity-bashing included, with frontman Jon McClure even leading the audience outside for an impromptu singalong in the street.

'Reverend' McClure and The Makers took to the stage in front of excited competition winners, launching into current album opener Silence Is Talking before applauding the audience for being 'a good competition crowd'. Renowned for his wit as well as his politically and sociologically conscious lyrics, McClure kept the enthusiastic crowd on their toes by engaging them in raising their middle finger to the BNP, listing 'great songs by shit artists' and taking a photographer's camera to snap the crowd and himself.

Mixing songs from their two albums, 2007's The State Of Things and this year's A French Kiss In The Chaos, they showcased their unique Madchester-inspired sound, including a blinding performance of new album closer Hard Time For Dreamers mid-set.

Seemingly not fulfilled by the 60 minutes of stage time, McCLure then invited the audience outside to 'wreck up the posh people', before performing a 30-minute acoustic set outside 148 Old Park Lane. With the added interest of curious passers-by, competition winners sang along to renditions of Bob Marley's "Jammin'", The Beatles' Revolution "because we need one", as well as three self-penned songs, including a hilarious (albeit rather unflattering) song referencing Peaches Geldof.

A classic Reverend-night then...

Our lucky competition winner won the opportunity to review the gig and interview the band. See below to see what they thought:

After seeing Reverend and the Makers support Oasis at Wembley, what a treat to see them in such an intimate venue! The gig was simply amazing as front man Jon McClure is fantastic at getting the crowd going. Playing tracks from the new album, the band played a 13 song set including, sing-a-longs such as ‘Heavy Weight Champion of the World’. After finishing the last song ‘Rev’ picked up an acoustic guitar and was followed by the crowd outside were he performed a few acoustic numbers getting the crowd to hum and sing-a-long whilst playing! He also covered a Bob Marley and Beatles song! He then left by running down the road with the crowd cheering after him. Amazing night!
