Fan Review
Our lucky competition winner won the opportunity to review the gig and interview the band. See below to see what they thought:
There was no big ensemble for Villagers at Concrete; Conor O’Brien took to the stage with Cormac Curran on keyboard and the understated confidence of an accomplished songwriter with a set-list of Mercury Prize nominated songs. From the first moment, the crowd held a steady admiration for O’Brien’s soaring stage presence. Something extraordinary happens when Conor O’Brien sings his songs of pure soul. With his visceral lyrics, he seems to speak to the audience in way that great poets do – he has an exceptional ability to explain the everyday, in all of its cynicism, banality and potential malice, in the most insightful and captivating terms. Newer songs held their own amongst crowd pleasers from the album; the set ending with a particularly poignant encore. The melody bewitches, the lyrics even more so. This intimate gig showed Villagers at their best. - Q competition winner, Gráinne McLoughlin.
